Fatalone Primitivo Riserva Gioia del Colle DOC 2021
Located at 400 meters above sea level with nothing between it and the sea, some 50 kilometers to the east is Gioia del Colle (“Joy of the Hills”). This area northwest of Bari is reputed as the historical home of Primitivo in Italy…. the first written record of the grape was documented by the village priest in the late 18th century.
One of Puglia’s two DOCs for the grape, Gioia del Colle Primitivo, is known for its characteristic elegance due to the high mineral content of the soil and the cooling sea breeze at night, both of which favour acidity. These factors make it something of a rarity as it is an age-worthy Primitivo!
Adding to its mystique is that fifth-generation winegrower, Pasquale Petrera, firmly believes in the benefits of playing music in the barrel room. He plays soft new age and classical music enriched with sounds of nature…based on the idea that these soft vibrations improve the activity of the microflora present in the wine and support its breathing when in casks”. All that aside, this Primitivo rises well above the typical “fruit bomb” reputation normally associated with the variety, allowing its typical note of almond to shine through.
The name Fatalone translates to ‘heartthrob’ and was the nickname of Pasquale’s grandfather, whose portrait adorns the label!
