Ficomontanino Rosso Toscana IGT “Bulgarelli” 2021

$42.90

South of Siena and smack on the border between Tuscany, Lazio and Umbria is the home of “The Little Hill of Figs”, where Maria Sole Giannelli farms the 11 hectares inherited from her grandfather, an impassioned gentleman farmer and racehorse breeder. Fun fact: all her wines are named after his favourite horses.  A devotee of Rudolf Steiner and Fukuoka, Maria Sole uses no chemicals or systemic fertilisers in her farming, also practising low intervention in the winery. While her style clearly leans in the ‘natural’ direction, her wines show purity and her innate talent as a winemaker.

This 100% sangiovese comes from 20-30 year old vines grown on three different sites.  Aromas of sweet paprika and sun-dried tomato mingle with roasted peppers. Zippy red cherry and cranberry acidity are bolstered by soft tannins and delicious, sweet fruit. Bulgarelli is vinified in concrete and steel, and is unfiltered and unclarified. This is a pure expression of Italy’s most native of native grapes.

Chiusi (Toscana)

100% Sangiovese
